My Experience
I love my internship at Lightnin' Jack Customs! I get to combine manufacturing techniques with design to make our customers happy. I've learned so much during my time here.
Measure & Modeling of Boats
I assisted in measuring customer boats with the Prodim Proliner measurement took. The tool involved a tethered pen device and remote that could be used to map out individual points on boat flooring. With these measurements, we could edit and design custom pieces for the printing of SeaDek flooring, an industry trend. SeaDek is an EVA foam floor that can be customized for boats and printed on a CNC machine.
3D Modeling and Aesthetic Design
CAD modeling software, specifically Rhino or the ProFactory software that was included with the Prodim Proliner, was an essential tool for cutting SeaDek. The measurements from the boats were imported into these software programs where I would then clean them and add in logos and designs. The pieces were modeled in both 2D and 3D so that each would fit the boat perfectly.
Marine Industry Knowledge
Before this opportunity, I knew almost nothing about the marine industry or boats. Throughout the summer, I learned boating terminology, common maintenance processes, and industry standards and trends.
Shop Task Assistance
I also assisted with general shop tasks during the summer. I was able to shadow and assist with boat maintenance such as t-top installation and gel coast restoration, as well as general organization and office administration tasks.
CNC Machining
I work with the team to machine various pieces on the CNC router. Though we mostly use EVA foam, we have a variety of materials at our disposal. I assist with loading the machine, creating toolpaths, and monitoring the machine's performance.
