My Experience
This piece was created as the final project of my Introduction to 3D Design course. Our assignment was to make a lantern out of paper mache and brazed wire. We were responsible for creating the lantern and finding an appropriate light source.
Papier Mache
I used tracing paper to paper mache the structure of the lantern. I cut it into tiny pieces and dipped it into a glue substance. I appreciated this material because it allowed the light to shine through. I learned to ensure cleanliness of the paper placement and avoiding gaps.
Wire Brazing
I started this piece by creating the brazed wire frame. I had a lot of difficulty with getting the wires to fit together and form a face-shaped structure. Part of the difficulty was the brazing material, as it would melt if re-heated. this made some of the more intricate connections very difficult, but ultimately very effective in the piece.
Integration of Technology into Art
The final component of the piece was the light source. I used a strip of LED lights connected to a remote control to light my piece. This was difficult to do, and I had to strategically place the lights so that they would shine evenly. I had to add in new brazed connections to distribute the light throughout.
